MISS DIG / 811 — What It Is and How to Use the Public Dashboard

MISS DIG (811) is the service used to mark public underground utilities such as gas, electric, water, sewer, and communications lines before digging occurs. While private irrigation and sprinkler lines are not typically marked, MISS DIG information is still useful for understanding what public utility work has been requested near your home.

You can view active and recent dig requests using the MISS DIG Public Dashboard:

 https://www.missdig811.org/publicdashboard.html

How to look up information for your residence:

  1. Open the Public Dashboard using the link above.

  2. Use the search or map tools to locate your address or zoom into your neighborhood.

  3. View active tickets to see:

    • Which utility companies have requested work

    • The general work area and scope

    • The status and timing of utility marking

  4. This information can help you confirm whether work near your property is associated with an active utility request.

Important to note:

  • MISS DIG marks public utilities only.

  • Private lines (sprinkler systems, landscape lighting, drainage, etc.) are usually not located, even if a ticket exists.

  • It is still encouraged to review the dashboard for awareness and safety, but it may not prevent irrigation damage.

Additional Important Notes

  • Snow, frozen ground, or wet conditions may prevent proper paint or flag markings, increasing the risk of accidental damage.

  • Residents may request that crews hand-dig, pothole, or vacuum-expose near suspected irrigation crossings (valve boxes, manifolds, curb-to-house runs) before trenching.

Steps You Can Take Today to Reduce Risk

  • Take photos or video of your yard and work area before crews pass your property.

  • Place tall driveway or snow stakes at:

    • Sprinkler valve boxes or manifolds

    • Known sleeves under sidewalks or driveways

    • Areas where sprinkler lines typically run parallel to walkways or driveways

  • If you have irrigation paperwork or diagrams (“as-builts”), keep them handy and show them to the on-site foreman if possible.
